Ramps, traffic lanes open at new U.S. 31 interchange in Hamilton Co.

Hamilton County, Ind.

All ramps and traffic lanes at the new US 31 interchange with 146th Street and Keystone Parkway are now open.

Wednesday afternoon, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor for the $35 million project, activated the traffic signals on the 146th Street bridge, opened the new northbound US 31 exit ramp to 146th Street, and opened access from both directions of 146th Street to southbound US 31, Range Line Road and Clay Terrace Boulevard—before Thanksgiving and the holiday shopping season.

The opening of the northbound US 31 exit ramp to 146th Street and the left turn from westbound 146th Street to southbound US 31, Range Line Road and Clay Terrace Boulevard lifts all long-term restrictions at the new interchange configuration.

Crews worked over the weekend and into this week to shift mainline US 31 traffic into permanent configurations.  Each direction of US 31 now has three freeway-style travel lanes on new pavement between Greyhound Pass and the Monon Trail overpass.

Some temporary lane restrictions on US 31 and 146th Street may be necessary after the holiday weekend to allow contractors to finish various tasks.

The interchange upgrade creates a more efficient ramp system connecting US 31, Keystone Parkway and 146th Street.  Six new bridges and more than a mile of six-lane highway have been constructed while maintaining traffic on US 31 and limiting ramp closures to the shortest possible times by using financial incentives to expedite construction.

The new US 31 Hamilton County is part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of US 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend.  Upgrading the existing highway between I-465 and State Road 38 to interstate standards will be the largest and most aggressive road project ever implemented in Hamilton County.  The US 31 Hamilton County project is intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and provide continuity of commerce and regional travel for a US highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
