Lingering injury puts Purdue’s Jay Simpson out for the season

WEST LAFAYETTE – Matt Painter’s group of six freshman will be down to five for the rest of the season.

Forward Jay Simpson has been shut down for the season after a lingering foot injury continued to plague him through the first ten games of the season.

“Jay has made every effort to rehab his foot in order to continue to contribute on the court this season, but it hasn’t come along as quickly as we would have liked,” said Purdue head coach Matt Painter in a statement released by the university. “The most important thing for Jay right now is to get completely healthy so this injury doesn’t remain a problem down the road.”

Simpson, from Champaign, Ill., averaged 2.6 points in his ten games this season. Despite having played the first month-and-a-half, Purdue says that Simpson will seek a medical hardship waiver which would grant him another year of eligibility.
