SULLIVAN COUNTY, IND. — State Police and Sullivan County emergency agencies responded to a single-vehicle crash near the Knox-Sullivan County line late Sunday evening.

According to Indiana State Police, the crash happened at 10:03 p.m. Sunday on Old U.S. 41.

An initial investigation leads Troopers to believe a 2006 Dodge Charger was driving northbound at a high rate just north of County Road 1200 South when the vehicle left the roadway, traveled about 200 feet and struck a tree.

Medics transported the driver, Billy Sothermann, 30 of Oaktown, Ind., to Sullivan County Community Hospital with facial, leg and internal injuries.

The passenger, identified as Sothermann’s wife Shanda, 28 of Oaktown, Ind., died at the scene.

Troopers believe neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Alcohol may also be a factor.
