(CNN) — Three people, at least two of them students, were wounded in a shooting on a Texas community college campus Tuesday, a school spokesman said.

One of the shooters at the North Harris Campus of Lone Star College was among the wounded and is in custody, spokesman Jed Young said. The other shooter fled the campus, he said.

Authorities were searching for a suspect in a wooded area next to the campus, a law enforcement source said.

A fourth person at the college suffered a heart attack during the shooting, according to a federal law enforcement official who received reports from the scene. Reports indicate the shooting occurred at the school’s library, the official said.

“The police believe the danger has been mitigated,” Young said.

One suspect is in custody, Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland said in a written statement. “Their role in this incident is under investigation.”

There were more than 10,000 students on the campus at the time of the shooting, Young said. The campus was evacuated and closed for the remainder of the day, according to a post on the school’s website.

“I’m still hoping that all of my friend are OK,” said Amanda Vasquez, a freshman at the college who heard at least six shots go off while she was in English class. “I didn’t really see any of my friends afterward. I was just trying to get to my parents.”

Police and emergency responders swarmed an entrance to the campus, aerial video from KPRC showed.

Lone Star College student Brittany Mobley told CNN affiliate KHOU that she saw the shooting.

“I saw two dudes basically get into an altercation and … the dude that shot, he basically got angry and you know started shooting the other guy,” said Mobley. “A lot of people heard a lot of shots.”

Medical personnel were seen treating at least two people and moving them to ambulances. One person appeared to be handcuffed to a stretcher. Students were jogging away from some buildings, with their hands up in the air, presumably in response to police instruction.

“I heard no less than five shots and I just ran,” one student told CNN affiliate KTRK. “My heart was pounding. I was praying I wouldn’t hear anymore shots. I was with a bunch of other people running and someone yelled out, ‘don’t push!’ People were crying, I had tears in my eyes.”

Another witness told KTRK he saw blood on the ground and someone shot in the leg.

“Beside him, there was one guy in handcuffs,” he said.

“I just heard somebody screaming and then after that I heard the shots,” another student told KPRC.

A spokesman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry said the governor’s office was monitoring the situation.

“His thoughts and prayers are with those who have been impacted,” spokesman Josh Havens said.

The Lone Star College system is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, and the fastest-growing community college system in Texas, according to its website.

so Liesel, your answer is that everyone carries a gun and that would have stopped the criminals in this case? Its so easy to keyboard quarterback.

  • spokenword100

Liesel- Is this the only possible way? I'm not going to sit here and act life I have the perfect solution BUT…I just don't agree that more guns is the answer!? Guns don't kill people- people kill people! So wouldn't it make since to start at the source of the problem THE PEOPLE! THE PEOPLE with guns that are not in there right state of mind, THE PEOPLE with guns that have absolutely no conscious or mind control, THE PEOPLE with guns that think its okay to make inhumane, self-centered, crazy insane decisions to take another humans life, THE PEOPLE with the guns that have no good purpose for possessing them other than to cause harm! Something has to be done with and for THESE PEOPLE!

I don't agree with taking all the guns or giving out more! There has to be more scrutiny in the process of issuing and approving the purchase of these weapons! There also has to be more street control in regards to guns sold and bought illegally…I believe that once the government figures out a way to do these things. There will be a decrease in these senseless violent acts!

So this is not a random spree kill but two dumb azzes getting into a fight, whipping out gatts, and lighting the place up.

This happens every other night in the 42nd/Post area. Why isn't that making national news?

  • John Browning

What the heck? Why are my comments being deleted. There is absolutely NOTHING offensive or vulgar about them. Nothing like 1st Amendment freedoms huh?

    • AverySays

The 1st Amendment protects you from the GOVERNMENT censoring you. This is not a government website. People need to read their constitution! Constitutional rights are meaningless if they are not understood.

  • John Browning

hmm ok… Lets just try the first 2 sentences.

Just a couple criminals getting into a gunfight. This isn't what I would call "a shooting", I would call it a gunfight.

  • John Browning

    Couple sentences at a time…

Nothing you do will stop this. Obviously a couple criminals don't care about the laws.

  • John Browning

really????????? you can't use the phrase m@ss sh0oting

You know, because it isn't in your OWN FREAKING HEADLINES!

  • John Browning

    Now for the whole thing

Just a couple criminals getting into a gunfight. This isn't what I would call "a shooting", I would call it a gunfight.

Nothing you do will stop this. Obviously a couple criminals don't care about the laws. If a bystander had a gun, they wouldn't engage in this anyway. Had it been a m@ss sh0oting where a person is indiscriminately shooting people, THEN an armed bystander would be helpful.

I carry a gun anytime I am wearing pants. If I see 2 people shooting at each other, I'm just going to get me and mine the heck out of there unless I KNOW FOR SURE that one of them is a victim. If I see someone randomly shooting people, then I will shoot back.

The media is reporting this in an attempt to make people think that m@ss sho0tings are a common thing. This isn't a m@ss sh0oting, its just a couple criminals getting into a gunfight. It happens every day. This time it just happened to be on a college campus.

Fox59, your filters are RIDICULOUS! How can people have actual conversations when you don't allow phrases that are not offensive and RELEVANT to current events?

Who the heck comes up with this????

  • 'Thor'

    Check it out …

    Ft Hood: Registered Democrat/Muslim.
Columbine: Too young to vote; both families were registered Democrats and progressive liberals.
Virginia Tech: Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff.
Colorado Theater: Registered Democrat; staff worker on the Obama campaign; Occupy Wall Street participant; progressive liberal.
Connecticut School Shooter: Registered Democrat; hated Christians.

Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive liberal Democrats.

    • AverySays

Ummm….you just contradicted what you already said within your post.

You only showed that half of the shooters, from your five hand-picked shootings, were registered .democrats.

      Try again.

      • 'Thor'

Half out of five? Only a liberal could come up with that and I'm laughing. ALL have liberal demorcratic (terrorists) ties, ALL. Five shootings, six shooters, just to help you out.
