How to protect your children against sub-zero temperatures

During the winter season, it is important to remember the best ways to keep children safe in the cold weather.

Dr. Mitch Goldman is with Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent. He says when the wind chill drops to around the zero degree mark, frostbite can set in in just a matter of minutes. That is why it is important to wear plenty of layers.

“Make sure you dress appropriately- layered clothing, lots of layers. The more layers the better. Good, sturdy shoes, boots if you can. Gloves, hats, scarves- all the usuals,” says Dr. Goldman.

Some other things to keep in mind. The rule of thumb for babies and young children is to dress them in one more layer than an adult would wear in the same conditions.

If frostbite does occur, bring the child inside and put the frostbitten areas in warm, not hot water.

If the child is hypothermic, take the child inside, take off any wet clothes and wrap him or her in warm blankets. Also, be sure to call 911.
