Great news for dogs living in Carmel—the city plans to build its first dog park!

Carmel Clay Parks announced plans Monday night to move forward on constructing the fenced in dog park on the northern edge of Carmel’s Central Park, located near 116th Street and Rangeline Road.

The north side of Central Park consists of approximately 35 acres.  Early construction plans reserve about seven acres for the dog park, but it can expand with future improvements.

Members of the parks board are expected to approve a plan to move forward with the designing and planning of the park.  Construction could begin in the fall.

According to parks director Mark Westermeier, the initial cost for the preliminary phase of the dog park could cost a few hundred thousand dollars.  Future improvements, including parking spaces, retention ponds and a shelter, could cost $1 million or more.
