ELWOOD – One person died after a head-on crash on State Road 37 near Elwood.

According to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson, a Volkswagen heading northbound crossed the center line and slammed into an oncoming box truck in the southbound lane around 9 a.m. Tuesday. The driver of the car was pinned in the wreckage and died at the scene.

The driver of truck went by ambulance to an area hospital.

When officers arrived at the scene, the box truck was in the ditch on its passenger side. Madison County Hazmat was on the scene because the truck’s fuel tanks ruptured, spilling fuel on the road.

As off 1:10 p.m., the sheriff’s department said SR 37 had reopened.

The crash had forced officials to shut down the road for several hours and detour traffic.
