The 2012 WNBA Champion Fever are still basking in their first ever title. On Thursday afternoon the State Senate even made sure to recognize the team that beat the Minnesota Lynx 3-1 in the best of 5-game series. Team President Kelly Krauskopf, Head Coach Lin Dunn and players Tamika Catchings and Tammy Sutton-Brown were on hand to receive the Senate Resolution acknowledging them as the 2012 WNBA Champions.
“It’s cool that they take the time and put us in the schedule for today and honor our team and organization for all the things that we have done,” said Catchings.
“The city was so behind us in our championship run, you know selling out Bankers Life Fieldhouse those last two games. Then, to come in here and hear the Resolution and once again be patted on the back for a great season, I’m just honored,” added Dunn.
Its means that much more because Tamika Catchings was able to stand on the Senate floor still a member of the Indiana Fever. The team resigned the three-time Olympic gold medalist this week to a free agent contract so Catchings can remain with the only WNBA team for which she has ever played.
“I’m excited about resigning here and excited about the upcoming year. I think that coming off of last year it was really important to come back and be apart of this and try to repeat of course,” said Catchings.
“She wants to finish her career here and play her entire career here. Not many players have done that and I think its a tribute to her and it’s a tribute to the organization,” said Dunn.
The Fever will begin their title defense on May 24th in San Antonio, their 2013 home opener is scheduled for May 31st against Atlanta.
