GARY – A 23-year-old mother who crashed a car with four children inside tested more than three times the legal limit and did not have a valid license, police say.

Police said Pamela Hunter crashed a friend’s car into a bridge abutment early Tuesday. Only one of her four children—an infant—was properly restrained, police said. The kids ranged in age from 4 months to 5 years. A 3-year-old child suffered a broken femur.

Police said Hunter was driving at 3:25 a.m. when she hit the bridge support beam. The crash set the car on fire. A man who was also in the car got the kids out of the vehicle.

Police said a test put Hunter’s blood alcohol content at 0.25 percent.

The children have been placed in foster care.
