Plea deal entered for former Shelbyville coach accused of having relations with teen

A former Shelbyville High School assistant cheerleading coach accused of having inappropriate relations with a 17-year-old student entered a plea deal in court Thursday.

Megan Crafton was arrested on June 15 and charged with child seduction, after the Shelbyville Police Department received information about her relationship with a male student.

Crafton was originally charged with child seduction, but as part of her plea deal, her charge was changed to dissemination of matter or conducting performance harmful to minors, which she pleaded guilty to. The new charge is still a felony, but Crafton will not have to register as a sex offender.

“The prosecutor’s office was willing to compromise to that level. I can’t speak to their motivations for doing that. I just know they worked well with us,” said Allen Lindy, Crafton’s attorney.

Lindy continued. “She’s got her whole life ahead of her, and hopefully, this is just a blip on the radar for her.”

According to court documents, Crafton admitted to police to performing oral sex on a then 17-year-old student at the high school where she was working inside her car in a Western Supermarket parking lot in Shelbyville.

“Even though he wasn’t a cheerleader that she had, he was still in the system as a student, which put her in a position of authority, which made it illegal,” said Lt. Michael Turner with the Shelbyville Police Department.

Crafton’s Attorney had fought that argument that was made by authorities months ago by arguing that his client may not have been a school employee. He also claimed his client did not supervise the male student, but a document she had signed that was later presented by the prosecution pushed the case forward according to Lindy.

“Megan did talk to the police. She did make admissions of the conduct involved, and again, she did sign as an employee of the school even though in a very, very limited role,” said Lindy.

Crafton will be on probation for approximately a year and a half, she will serve 25 hours of community service, and pay court fees among other court-ordered requirements.

The deputy prosecutor on the case, Jennifer Kinzley, said they met with Lindy several times, and they feel this conclusion is fair to both sides.

She also said if Crafton does not violate her probation, she can ask a judge to reduce the sentence to a misdemeanor.

Crafton did not speak with FOX59.

Shelbyville Central School officials also did not comment Thursday on the case.

        If you're going to correct someone, make sure you're correct. The article states "the Shelbyville Police Department received information about her relationship with a male student." That means someone told the police. "Nobody told anybody"? Where the heck did you read "they were caught in the act"? Wow.

    This is what she pleaded to: It would have been line 4.
    IC 35-49-3-3
    Dissemination of matter or conducting performance harmful to minors
    Sec. 3. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), a person who knowingly or intentionally:
    (1) disseminates matter to minors that is harmful to minors;
    (2) displays matter that is harmful to minors in an area to which minors have visual, auditory, or physical access, unless each minor is accompanied by the minor's parent or guardian;
    (3) sells, rents, or displays for sale or rent to any person matter that is harmful to minors within five hundred (500) feet of the nearest property line of a school or church;
    (4) engages in or conducts a performance before minors that is harmful to minors;
    (5) engages in or conducts a performance that is harmful to minors in an area to which minors have visual, auditory, or physical access, unless each minor is accompanied by the minor's parent or guardian;

    I'm not sure how the "performance" was harmful to the guy, but I guess they needed something lower to plead to. As this is a D felony, and her first offense, it can be entered as an A misdemeanor.

    The only thing that made this a crime, was they she was employed by the same school that he attended, even though she did not teach and had no authority over him. The age situation is not an issue as the age of consent in Indiana is 16. I don't believe the law was intended for this type of an incident.

    All of you who think this is "okay" are idiots.

    Had the genders been reversed you mongrels would have been on this site baying for the guy's blood and there sure as hell wouldn't have been a plea deal.

    The double standards with sex crimes is astounding.

    I Dont understand what she did wrong here. He was 17 she was 22. I think the prosecutor was mad because this didnt happen to him. But yes if this was a guy they would have tried to hang him.

    I went to school with her for a few years. She was always a little boy crazy. Like DRT52 said, age isn't the issue here. The only problem was with the employment situation. However, I'm not saying that this is okay.

    What a double standard. She was the adult and should know better. Lack of boundaries! Her teaching license should be revoked !!!

    Waste of resources. There is a double standard, along with racism and many other inadequacies in our society which you will not fix. She should be disciplined for violating a school/employer policy and let the parties move on. I highly doubt the male feels victimized and by law he was not. If we put our energy into real crime and used our resources wisely, we would not be wasting our time and money on instances such as these.

    The martinsville teacher and the coach both got 9 yrs. probation, loss of teaching license and required to register as sex offenders. Oh what a difference a gender makes. The girl involved with the coach and teacher had Graduated from high school, so she was NOT a student. They are working on raising consent to 18. Also there is something in the law that increases the severity of the crime if the perp is 4 or more yrs older than thealleged victim. But, the women never get the hard charges like the guys do. In fiact, the better looking the female, the lighter the punishment. So if you want to break the law, especially those rerferred to as heinous, dispicable, sickening, terrible, etc., if it involves an adult male with a young female, make sure you are young and "hot" and all the self-righteous, "protectors of the public" will cut you loose in a heartbeat. Hypocrites.
