INDIANAPOLIS – St. John the Evangelist Church will open Thursday following a fire that forced church leaders to shut down the historic church Wednesday.

In a message sent to Fox 59, Father Rick Nagel thanked the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Fire Department and everyone who came to the scene of the fire.

“We are deeply grateful for the immediate response and thorough work of all those professionals involved,” Nagel wrote.

Nagel also expressed gratitude for the kind phone calls, emails and text messages that have poured into the parish.

“This outpour of love exemplifies the goodness of God’s people in the midst of tragedy,” he wrote.

Nagel said there were no additional details regarding the investigation. He said the church would reopen Thursday for regular weekday confessions t 11:15 a.m. and regular weekday Mass at 12:10 p.m.

Repairs and cleanup from the smoke damage will continue before and after those times.
