I feel bad for the victims and their families. If this was a school field trip, then why weren't the students on a transported bus rather than in their personal vehicle?

It wasn't a field trip. They were at an FFA meeting at the church.

FFA is a school sponsored activity. They should have been on a bus.

The event started at 6:00 AM prior to the start of the school day. So, the students had to supply their own transportation according to the school superintendent during the press conference.
