Documents say Sandy Hook shooter had his own gun safe

This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.

(CNN) — Police released new documents related to the shootings last year at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, but a motive for the attack remained elusive.

Included in the new information is the report that a gun safe was found in the bedroom of 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who took guns belonging to his mother, Nancy, and shot her in her forehead in her bed. Then he went to the school in Newtown, where he gunned down 20 children and six staff members before killing himself.

Investigators found more than 1,400 rounds of ammunition in the house, and a holiday card with a check “made out to Adam Lanza for the purchase of a C183 (firearm), authored by Nancy Lanza,” according to a search warrant.

Relatives of the victims were briefed Wednesday about the documents, which were released Thursday morning.

Some of the documents, released by state prosecutors, have been redacted at the prosecutors’ request, said Paul Vance, a spokesman for the Connecticut State Police.

State police are continuing their investigation, which is not expected to be completed until June, he said.

The killings have led Connecticut legislators to re-examine the state’s gun laws, which are among the nation’s strictest, and have reopened a national debate on gun control.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, has announced plans to introduce legislation requiring background checks to purchase ammunition. He has pressured members of his state legislature to take action to bolster his efforts on a national level.

CNN’s Susan Candiotti and Samira Jafari contributed to this report.

I am all for handguns for self-defense or rifles for hunting but ONLY SOLDIERS AND SWAT TEAMS NEED ASSAULT RIFLES. OBAMA NEEDS TO GROW A PAIR AND BAN ASSAULT RIFLES NOW!

      Larsa,
An "Assault Weapon" is something that has selective fire (Fully automatic, or 3 shot or single). The .223 bullet is just as small as the .22 that everyone has used to hunt squirrels and rabbits. There is no difference between an AR-15 and a Ruger Range Rifle. They both shoot .223, one shot per trigger squeeze. The only difference is the Ruger is wooden and looks like the old gun your grandpa has so it isn't "scary". Please look up things before looking like an idiot.

The weapons used by soldiers and swat teams are different from those used for hunting. They are capable of fully automatic fire those used for hunting are semi- automatic. That means you pull the trigger for each shot. What they are calling assault weapons are only cosmetically different from what you call a hunting rifle. They use the same ammo and work the same way they just have fancy accessories to hold flashlights and scopes. Educate yourself

@Larsa, do you even know what an assault rifle is?? Please enlighten us all as to how an AR-15 is the same as what our military uses…..Oh wait, they look the same so it must be pretty dangerous!! Please educate yourself before posting about something you know nothing about.

    • tired of liberals

Spoken like a true idiot liberal. The gun was misused by a mentally disturbed person.if he didn't have a gun he may have used a bomb and killed even more kids. Should gas and fertilizer also be banned? The gun is not capable of acting on its own.

    • concerned citizen

only soldiers and swat teams have assault rifles
an AR-15 is not an assault rifle….read a freaking book
besides he didnt even use and assault rifle
it was later released that he didnt even have one with him at all
he only used handguns and he left a shotgun in the truck of his car
do you read everything as fact? if so, i bet your mind was blown when you read the twilight saga

I wonder where are all the racist comments are on this story.. only white ppl.. kill innocent ppl.. tell them go bk to England… Yall fucking up the Indians country… Ban on assault rifles won't work.. as long as we got crazy ass white ppl doing mass shootings.. you don't see blk ppl doin this do you??

    • Larsa

I agree with you that it's funny there are no racist comments on this one. But I disagree. The ban will at least make it more difficult to carry out school shootings.

      • NOBODY

I now realize that I am an ignorant excuse for a human and hope that you can forgive me for my uneducated comment. I am truly sorry. It is not an excuse, but my father was also an uneducated racist loser. I will make an effort to be less of a detriment to society if you give me another chance.

I don't use google, but I did look it up and also found Jake Bird, Anthony Sowell, Andre Crawford, Lorenzo Gilyard, Cleophus Prince, and Wayne Williams. These are six of the worst, but there are many more.

I didn't get one, I got three. Education is your friend, get to know him.

wake up America open your eyes already. I just cant believe how many of you still think this was real and not a setup to take away our rights. Explain to me how a 20 yr old kid with mental challenges has better shooting accuracy then a trained shooters. That he can kill 26 people and only wound 1. And the explain to me how he shot and killed all these kids with this assault rifle from the trunk of his car where they retrieved it from and he never came back out of the building once he entered it. Anyone Anyone can you explain it to me. If you can explain those to me I will then believe it as true

What Police Found at the School

After receiving a 911 call from inside the school at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2012, Newtown and Connecticut State Police officers rushed to the 12 Dickinson Road elementary school. An unoccupied black, 4-door Honda Civic was parked in the fire lane directly in front of the school. Authorities later learned it was registered to Nancy Lanza. [more on what was found in the vehicle below]

Upon entering the school police found the bodies of the 26 victims in the first three classrooms off the main hallway, and the deceased body of the shooter, who police said had taken his own life.

The shooter was reportedly wearing “military style clothing” and a bullet proof vest. He had several handguns as well as a military style assault weapon, the documents state, without specifying the make or model of the firearms.

What Police Found in the Car

In addition to DNA evidence collected as well as a shoe imprint, police say officers found a Saiga 12 Shotgun, with two magazines containing 70 rounds of Winchester 12 gauge shotgun rounds, inside the Honda Civic.

What Police Found in the House

Following the response to the school on Dec. 14, authorities executed a search of the Lanza household on Yogananda Street. There, they found the body of Nancy Lanza in her bed, dead from an apparent gunshot to the head.

In subsequent searches, police confiscated hundreds of pieces of evidence, ranging from prescription drug documents to weapons, and journals and gaming consoles, as well as electronics, including a smashed computer hard drive. More specifically:

Blue folder labeled “Guns” that contained receipts, paperwork and other firearm related material
Holiday card from Nancy to Adam with a check for the purchase of a C183 firearm
      Medical papers
NRA registrations for both Nancy Lanza and Adam Lanza
      Legal documents
School-related paperwork, including a Sandy Hook School report card, pertaining to Adam Lanza
Artwork and literature by Adam Lanza, including seven journals
A journal penned by Ryan Lanza, Adam’s brother who was wrongfully named the shooter on the morning of Dec. 14
Books on subjects ranging from shooting techniques to Aspergers and parenting
Emails and receipts documenting firearm and ammunition and shooting supplies
Items related to the school located in the master bedroom
      Receipt for a shooting range
Article clipping from The New York Times of an article on the Dec. 18, 2008, shooting at Northern Illinois University

The contents of a brown gun safe included several boxes of ammunition, including:

      shotgun shells
      .22 caliber bullets
      .45 caliber bullets
      303 British rifle cartridges
      .223 caliber

      And weapons, including:

      A bolt-action rifle, .223 caliber

Ammunition was also located on two shelves in a bedroom closet as well as in a filing cabinet. Other weapons found include three Samurai swords, at least nine knives with blades ranging from 3.75 inches to 12 inches, as well as a six-foot, 10-inch long wooden pole with a spear on one side and a blade on the other.

In the bedroom believed to be Adam Lanza’s, police found:

      Photo of a dead boy
      Gun safe
      Playstation
      XBox 360
      Microsoft XBox
      Video games
      Cell phones
      Hard drives
      Computers
      Thumb drives
      Cassettes and CDs

Documents were located throughout the house, including in the shooter’s bedroom. They included newspaper clippings, personal notes, memoirs, drawings, medical records, bills, invoices, receipts, and subscriptions and prescriptions believed to pertain to and/or collected by Adam Lanza.

Those documents are being used to create a psychological profile of the shooter and point to the planning, execution and concealment of criminal activity, the documents state.

It is very odd that this story seems to be coming up again. Did they relay just find a check marked for the purchase of a rifle as it is written above? C'mon man , most of America isn't that stupid! Ban booze and drunk driving deaths go away, right! Ban spoons and sodas and people won't be fat right? Ban murder and people won't kill, right? YEAH, right!

  • 'Thor'

This article is part of an AP piece that I read earlier and I caught this while browsing thru the article.

"The guns found at the home included a .323-caliber Enfield Albian bolt-action rifle,"

There is no such caliber as a .323.The Enfield is a British firearm that shoots a .303 not a .323. Journalism is almost dead today and what the main-stream media puts out today is biased, inaccurate, and extremely flawed. I don't trust them any longer.
