FULTON, IND. — A man is in the hospital after a standoff with state and local police.

State troopers, Fulton County sheriff’s deputies, and other law enforcement agencies responded to a domestic situation with shots fired in the 300 block of West Brown Street in Fulton, Ind. around 8:15 p.m. Thursday night.

According to a press release from Indiana State Police, Nicholas S. Westerhoff, 46, was inside the home refusing to give himself up.

Police set up a perimeter around the home, trying several times to negotiate with Westerhoff.

Around 11:40 p.m., police say Westerhoff came to the door and started firing his weapon. That’s when police returned fire.

Westerhoff was injured during the exchange of gunfire, but it’s not known if his injuries were self-inflicted or caused by officers returning fire.

Westerhoff was flown to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Ind. in serious condition.
