Police: Anderson man on bath salts stole ambulance, hoped police ‘would shoot him’

ANDERSON – An Anderson man accused of stealing an ambulance and crashing it into several cars told police he did it in hopes that they “would shoot him.”

Joseph L. Sandlin didn’t get that particular wish, but he did find himself booked on several charges Friday morning, including theft of a motor vehicle, operating while intoxicated (drugs), leaving the scene of an accident and operator never licensed. Police said Sandlin was also wanted on a warrant for domestic battery.

Around 4 a.m. Friday, police found Sandlin sitting in the driver’s seat of an ambulance in the1700 block of Main Street. He’d run into five parked cars. Officers asked him if he’d been drinking; Sandlin answered that he hadn’t had anything to drink but had taken hydrocodone and several other pills, including bath salts.

When asked why he did it, Sandlin said he took the ambulance “because he wanted to find a police car and wreck into it so that (the police) would shoot him.”

Sandlin was taken to an area hospital for tests. No one was hurt.
