INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– No one likes waiting in line at the check-out counter.
Retailers are smart enough to know if you don’t like your experience in their store, you will shop somewhere else.
So, Kroger Supermarkets is going high-tech.
“This is the first heat sensor at the front door that tracks when a customer walks through the front door,” said Kroger manager Andrew Sair, as he pointed to the ceiling.
It was a heat sensor. Kroger is using military-style infrared cameras that detect body heat to track the people in the store and at the check-out counters, so they have enough cashiers to keep the lines moving. It’s called Que-Vision.
“It tracks from when you walk in the door about how much time the average shopper takes from the front door to the checkout,” said Sair.
Since Kroger started using Que-Vision, they say they have been able to cut their wait times at the check-out counter from about two minutes to about 25 seconds.
“And we’ve got competitors out there that are still substantially over 10 minutes wait time and believe me customers that we share with those competitors have noticed,” said Kroger spokesperson John Elliott.
“At times you know the line can be so long, but this is wonderful,” one shopper said.
Retailers say it’s got to be faster and easier for the consumer in this gets it quick online society to keep building brand loyalty especially in a tough economy.
“This is our chance to make that last impression as they finish up their shopping and leave our stores, very positive last impression,” Elliott said.
