INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– One man was critically injured after his Wayne Township home caught fire Thursday morning. Investigators ruled careless smoking as the cause.

Crews with the Wayne Township Fire Department responded to the fire in the 2500 block of South Holt Road on the city’s southwest side around 9 a.m.

When firefighters arrived to the scene, they reported seeing fire coming out of the living room window extending to the attic. Crews were able to contain the fire in approximately 10 minutes.

Fire officials said a man was found on the porch, suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation. He was transported to Wishard Hospital.

The homeowner’s dog was able to escape the fire as firefighters opened the door to the home.

Damage to the house is estimated at $30,000.
