NWS confirms EF-1 tornado detected near Peru Wednesday

PERU, Ind.– The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana confirmed Thursday an EF-1 tornado touched down near Peru, Ind. Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the tornado’s wind speed was estimated at 95 miles per hour and traveled approximately 3.5 miles. The tornado was detected just south of the city around 1:28 p.m.

Severe storms rolled into the area Wednesday, causing widespread damage throughout the city. Preliminary reports indicated straight line winds reached as high as 80 mph, prompting several electrical fires and downed power lines.

A National Weather Service damage survey team was dispatched to Peru Thursday to survey areas with extensive damage.

No injuries were reported.
