The need for blood donors typically rises during the summer months.  Many of you have responded to recent urgent calls from the Red Cross but now there’s a new need.

The Red Cross says platelet donors are desperately needed.

A single platelet donation can provide enough platelets for two or three therapeutic doses. It takes four to six whole blood donations to produce a single therapeutic dose.

Patients who need platelets are usually undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplant.

People with rare blood types are also being asked to roll up their sleeves. Those include O-negative, B-negative and A-negative.

If you’d like to donate, simply call 1-800-Red-Cross.
