PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. – Conservation officers are investigating the death of an Indianapolis man Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened at Cataract Lake in the Lieber State Recreation Area around 3:30 p.m. That’s when witnesses say they saw 37-year-old Rafael A. Lopez bobbing up and down in the water.

According to a statement from Conservation Officer Chris Springstun, bystanders stepped in and brought him to shore and immediately began performing CPR until medical personnel arrived.

Lopez was then transported by ambulance to the Putnam County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Putnam County Coroner will perform an autopsy Monday morning at Terre Haute Regional Hospital to determine an exact cause of death.
