INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation has a message for truck drivers: pay attention to the signs and realize the South Split is closed.
According to INDOT, multiple temporary and electronic signs are up advising of the I-65 and I-70 closure in downtown Indianapolis. Those signs tell drivers to take I-465 around the city, but not everyone is taking the detour.
INDOT said some trucks are continuing to go through I-65 and I-70 in an effort to bypass construction. They’re ending up on downtown roads not designed to accommodate large trucks, jamming up traffic and creating safety concerns.
INDOT has deployed additional signs on and before the downtown ramp system to Michigan Street, Ohio Street and Fletcher Avenue. INDOT is also working with Indianapolis and law enforcement agencies to consider additional traffic control and enforcement efforts.
Most I-65 and I-70 ramps into downtown Indianapolis remain open for local deliveries. Large trucks going through Indianapolis should expect significant traffic delays inside the I-465 loop and follow the posted detour.
Motorists, residents and businesses are encouraged to visit www.SouthSplit.in.gov to learn details of the project and sign up for email updates using the red GovDelivery envelope icon. Updates will also be provided on the Indiana Department of Transportation East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral and #SouthSplit.
