INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—A teacher at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired was fired this week after allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student surfaced.

Al Lovati was released from his duties on Wednesday after the allegation was made against him one day earlier.

In a statement released by Superintendent James Durst, an investigation was conducted by the State Personnel Department. The allegations were reported to Indiana State Police and a criminal investigation was launched.

“The health, safety and welfare of our students are the number one priority of the school and its staff,” said Superintendent Durst in the statement. “We are deeply troubled by this allegation and are reviewing the policies and procedures we already have in place to ensure we provide our students with a safe and positive living and learning environment.”

According to the school’s blog, Lovati is listed as a computer technology teacher.
