INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township and Speedway Schools announced they would cancel classes Thursday for the funeral of slain Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Bradway, who was fatally shot last Friday.
Authorities said Officer Bradway was “ambushed” after entering an apartment unit at the Eagle Pointe Apartments in regards to a domestic disturbance call.
According to police, the suspect, 24-year-old Steven Byrdo, fired at least six shots at the officer. Officer Bradway was able to return fire, fatally striking Byrdo, said police.
Before joining IMPD, Officer Bradway served as a firefighter and EMT with the Wayne Township Fire Department.
“We are all sadly aware of the sacrifice that IMPD Officer, Rod Bradway, made while protecting the citizens of Indianapolis,” said Superintendent Jeffrey Butts in a letter to Wayne Township parents. “We are honored that the city of Indianapolis has chosen to include Wayne Township for a major portion of Officer Bradway’s funeral procession this Thursday. However, as a result, the M.S.D. of Wayne Township will cancel school this Thursday, September 26. This decision was made in the interest of our children’s safety, the safety of our parents, and the concerns over traffic patterns during the processional.
“After-school events at our secondary schools will still be conducted as previously scheduled. Similarly to a day in which school is cancelled due to weather, childcare will be offered for those children already enrolled at the Wayne Township Preschool between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and the YMCA will offer daycare at Bridgeport Elementary. Parents who are interested in registering for the YMCA program should call the YMCA at 484-9622.”

Due to the cancellation of classes, the YMCA’s Youth Enrichment Center will be offering childcare to elementary and intermediate school-aged children in Wayne Township. Childcare will be available from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bridgeport Elementary School located at 9035 W. Morris St.
A public funeral service will be held for Officer Bradway at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Thursday at 11 a.m. A procession will follow and the burial service will be held in the Crown Hill Cemetery Heroes of Public Safety section. Vehicles that do not participate in the procession will not be allowed to enter the cemetery.
The public is encouraged to line up along the procession route in support of the fallen hero. Below is the route the procession will follow.
