INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– It is business as usual at Papa Roux’s on the eastside, but that’s not the story for many Hoosiers on furlough due to the government shutdown.
“These people didn’t ask for this,” said owner Art Bouvier on Wednesday. “So I thought, hey, I’m going to do IOU’s for these people, or if they simply can’t afford it, just pay what you can.”
Bouvier isn’t stopping there. He’s encouraging people to apply for work at his restaurant if they need a temporary gig to get by during the shutdown.
“I understand. I wouldn’t be able to survive if suddenly my pay was going to be delayed awhile,” said Bouvier.
If Cajun food isn’t your thing, maybe afternoon tea is more up your alley.
If so, head downtown to The Indianapolis Propylaeum Mondays through Thursdays from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
“They’re under a stressful time right now,” said assistant manager Nancy Showalter. “The country right now is going through a lot and these people have a lot to deal with so they can just come here, have an afternoon tea, bring a friend and just enjoy themselves.”
Be it a cup of tea or comfort food, both Showalter and Bouvier say this is just what Hoosiers do for each other.
“(Hoosiers) are welcoming to people,” said Showalter. “They’re warm. They give hugs, and this is kind of our hug to the federal employees.”
Scotty’s Brewhouse is offering 25 percent off dinner at any Scotty’s Brewhouse or 3 Wise Men location Wednesday evening, and AMC Theaters are offering a free small popcorn during the shutdown if you show a government ID. The AMC offer also includes all current members of our military forces.
