CARMEL (October 28, 2013) – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors E&B Paving and Gradex plan to shift traffic this week on U.S. 31/Meridian Street and the Exit 31 ramps from I-465. The traffic shifts will require overnight (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) lane restrictions on U.S. 31/Meridian Street south of Carmel Drive as contractors modify pavement markings. All ramps will remain open to traffic and will be narrowed to 11 feet after the shifts.

  • Monday, Oct. 28:  Contractors plan to shift traffic on southbound U.S. 31.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 29:  Contractors plan to shift traffic on northbound U.S. 31.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 30:  Contractors plan to shift traffic on the I-465 Exit 31 ramps to U.S. 31.

One lane of the westbound I-465 Exit 31 to U.S. 31/Meridian Street will remain restricted to allow contractors safe room to work on interchange improvements, including two new flyover ramps from southbound U.S. 31 to eastbound I-465 and eastbound I-465 to northbound U.S. 31.

The traffic shifts are to prepare for the installation of barrier wall, which will begin Tuesday night on the southbound side of the highway followed by installation on the northbound side. Overnight lane restrictions (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) will accompany the barrier wall installation on northbound and southbound U.S. 31/Meridian Street and the Exit 31 ramps. The lane restrictions are expected to continue each night weather permits for approximately one month.

The $141 million contract to upgrade U.S. 31 to freeway standards includes interchange improvements at I-465 and new roundabout interchanges at 106th, 116th, 131st and 136th streets expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2015.
