INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 21, 2014) – A man was fatally shot by police following a standoff on the north side Tuesday morning.

A large police presence arrived at Turtle Creek Apartments in the the 8200 block of Harcourt Rd around 9:40  a.m.

Around 11 a.m., shots were fired. A SWAT unit had been called to the scene. Police originally said the man’s condition was unknown following the shooting, but FOX59 has learned that the gunshot was fatal.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan police, officers were dispatched to the 8200 block of Hartcourt Road to assist medics. An EMS first responder noticed a gun inside the apartment and quickly left. The person was having trouble breathing, according to police. The officer who’d arrived to assist talked to the person and asked him to cooperate.

Police said the man became volatile and disregarded the officer’s requests to talk. SWAT negotiators arrived to defuse the situation. The man remained in the apartment throughout the encounter, police said, and continued to point a firearm at officers. SWAT fired “less lethal” rounds at the man to no effect. Negotiations continued to break down, and the man refused to drop the weapon as tensions escalated.

Police said he refused commands to “drop the gun and surrender.” Officers fired several shots, and the man was fatally wounded.
