It was a special Valentine’s Day for several local couples who had the chance to renew their wedding vows.
Held at the City Market in Downtown Indianapolis, it was all part of a special ceremony for straight and gay couples.
“We’re really glad you’ve chosen to renew your vows on this special day and what a beautiful backdrop for such a momentous occasion,” said Mayor Greg Ballard, R-Indianapolis.
It was even more momentous for several same-sex couples who came to renew their vows, like Darren Chittick and his partner Frank Dennis.
“We feel like it’s just the same as everybody else’s relationship,” said Chittick.
Friday’s celebration comes just a day after a decision at the Statehouse that they’re calling a victory, which leaves the controversial ban on same-sex marriage known as HJR-3 off of this year’s ballot.
“With it not being on the ballot this year, it gives us more time to talk to people and I think (it helps) the more people are able to meet folks like us, just living our lives,” Chittick said. “Being invited to be part of this today was exciting for us because it felt especially validating with what’s been going on in the state.”
City-county councilor Zach Adamson and his partner were also there- they just got married recently. Adamson says he appreciated the mayor including them in the celebration.
“I think we’re very fortunate to live in a city as welcoming as we do,” said Adamson. “The mayor’s always been very gracious in this area.”
