Man sentenced to home detention after child hit with sledgehammer during fight

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 19, 2014)— An Indianapolis man who police said threw a sledgehammer that critically injured a young boy during a fight that broke out in an east side neighborhood last August has been sentenced Wednesday.

Alfred Amos was sentenced to serve one and a half years on home detention after pleading guilty to criminal recklessness, a Class C felony.

Amos was arrested on Aug. 15, 2013 after the fight outside an apartment building at 2744 Priscilla Avenue around 8:45 p.m. Police said Amos threw a sledgehammer that struck an 8-year-old boy in the head, critically injuring him.

A 12-year-old girl was also injured in the incident.
