This freezing drizzle is not giving up! Thank you to everyone who is already sending in weather reports to me this evening. The roads are incredibly slick near Marion where we are hearing that several slide-offs have already occurred. Freezing drizzle also continues in Clinton County and a weather watcher from Kilmore says ice is covering just about everything. You can see the extension of that freezing drizzle through Montgomery, Boone, Clinton, Tipton and a portion of Hamilton County. Stay off the roads in this area

Road troubles continue in northern Indiana. INDOT just reported that a semi has jackknifed in the northbound side of I-65 in Jasper county at mile marker 208.  All lanes are closed at this time

Good morning everyone just drove in to all sleet on the cities north side.  I have a feeling our forecast snow totals will be coming down as well once Brian comes in.  At this point it is looking like 3″ – 6″.  As with any snow a narrow band of much higher totals could set up.

Here’s a look at radar at 4:30 this morning.  Narrow band of ice came down first before snow arrived.

Here’s our final snow total map for this event…

Model numbers coming in continue to be lower with every passing run here in Indianapolis.  A quick check of radar is showing some mid-level warmer air sneaking into Indianapolis first thing this morning and is keeping what is falling as sleet.  Indianapolis turned over to all snow at 5am this morning.  It is already snowing in places like Crawfordsville, Lafayette, Muncie and Kokomo and these communities can expect to see snow continuing through Noon and possibly longer.

Down to the south the snow forecast is just as murky.  Some of their potential snow will be eaten up by the stubborn mid-level warmth.  Once this cools they will see a wet snow falling.  And will likely see about the same amount of snow that we see here in Indianapolis.

At this point it looks like we will see snow in two waves.  This morning’s snow will continue through about 11am this morning where we can expect to see between 3 – 5 inches of snow.  A second wave later on tonight may bring an additional 2 – 4 inches of snow.  Overall that puts us in the 5 – 9 inch range.  This is on top of any ice that precedes the snow.

Update from Brian Wilkes:

Snow falling heavily since 5:30. 2 factors to lean on snow amount of 5″ to 9″: very cold air and instability. Heavy snow will fall through noon and given the cold this will be a higher ratio snow – fluffs up – the standard 10:1 snowfall (every inch of rain = 10″ of snow) this will double in this storm at 20:1. 5 computer model avg for the city is 7″ with large spread of 4.1″ to 10.8″. First surge of heavy snow this AM will ease around noon – wildcard is 2nd surge of moisture late afternoon and eve targets central/south-central Indiana.

From Jennifer Ketchmark: Here’s a quick radar update for you at 9:50 AM. A lull in snow is taking over in the northern half of the viewing area and that includes the city of Indianapolis. More waves of snow will push in this afternoon, so this event isn’t over. Just a break!

10AM UPDATE from Brian Wilkes: easing up as front stalls and lull has developed in city. New surge of moisture coming and we have updated snow map. Along and just south of I 70 appears to be the location of heaviest snow accumulation on top of the early morning ice.

First image a satellite/radar composite, with snow and ice extending southwest into Kansas – numerous reports of slide offs near the St.Louis area. With front stalling moisture moves up again later today and tonight. Key is the front and its stalled location. Adjusted axis of heaviest snow south and shaved off the northern band. Also, a look a the forecast radar later this evening. Enjoy the lull – storm is far from being over for many.

New push of snow developing in southwest Indiana.  This is moving east so it will bring snow back long the I-70 corridor and especially south of the city in the coming hours.

FOX 59’s Larry Hawley is in Bloomington for tonight’s game against Ohio State. Bloomington didn’t get much snowfall in today’s first wave, but they will get several inches in a second wave that is expected to move in around 4 p.m. today.

2 PM road update from INDOT.  We are seeing some improvements closer to the metro and salt on some of the main roads is doing its job.   My husband has been traveling in from Illinois along I-74 and he reports very good road conditions along I-74 between the Illinois state line and Brownsburg.  There were only a few spots where there was some patchy snow in the left lane.

Radar update at 6 PM:

Jennifer Ketchmark - Meteorologist March 2, 20146:59 PM

The NWS reports 2.4″ of snow has fallen in total today.  Snow hasn’t ended yet for the city but only minor accumulations are expected beyond this point in Indianapolis.

We did break the daily record for snowfall.  But we only needed to top 2″ of snow to do that.  We are yet to break the yearly record, we would need 6″ of snow total by the end of this system for that record to fall today.  Definitely not today.. but snow is still possible as March continues!

Another row of counties is dropped from the winter storm warning including: Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Marion, Parke, Putnam, Vermillion
