INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 24, 2014) – A driver is dead after crashing into a utility pole on the city’s near east side.

The accident occurred around 1 a.m. Monday at the intersection of East Michigan Street and Gale Street.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan police officer at the scene said he saw a car with no headlights speeding through the area. Just as the officer began to take down the car’s information, the driver went through a railroad overpass, swerved to avoid the overpass’s beam and lost control.

The driver then struck an IPL utility pole, severing it in half. When officers arrived, they found the driver unresponsive and suffering from apparent trauma.

EMS personnel arrived and pronounced the man dead. An unidentified male passenger was transported to Eskenazi Health in critical condition.
