INDIANAPOLIS (March 28, 2014) – Indianapolis firefighters had their hands full early Friday morning.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 1600 block of Barth Avenue on the south side around 4 a.m. after a report of a fire. Neighbors called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the house. IFD said the home was being renovated; burned out stairwells and holes in the floor proved challenging for firefighters inside.

One firefighter was slightly hurt after falling through the first-floor basement. The firefighter was checked out and released.

Crews had the fire under control in about an hour.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which investigators believe started in the basement before overtaking the home.

Fire officials said the homeowner lived in the home for 30 years. Damage to the house is estimated at $75,000.
