Apartment fire displaces 24 residents, sends 1 person to hospital

INDIANAPOLIS (April 17, 2014) – A Thursday morning fire left one person hospitalized and two dozen others looking for a place to live.

The fire started around 10:20 a.m. at 810 Lincolnwood Ln. in the Meridian Hills Apartments. Indianapolis Fire Department crews found heavy smoke when they arrived. The fire was under control in about 45 minutes.

The owner told crews that a worker who was using a welding torch during rehab work started the fire. Sixteen units were affected; four of them were heavily damaged by fire while two were affected by smoke and water damage. Ten other units sustained smoke damage.

One person went to St. Vincent with a possible burn injury, IFD said.

Twenty four people were displaced. IFD Victims Assistance will work with the Red Cross and apartment management to help those residents find shelter.

IFD estimated the damage at $500,000. The fire remains under investigation.
