CARMEL, Ind. (April 17, 2014)—Firefighters battled a barn fire that spread to a nearby home in Carmel Thursday.

Crews with the Carmel Fire Department were dispatched to the scene at the Village of West Clay at 12400 Hoover Road around 5 p.m.

The operations manager of Village of West Clay told FOX59 the barn was used as the property’s maintenance storage unit. The unit contained several utility vehicles, including golf carts, pickup trucks and other equipment.

Officials said strong winds spread the flames to a nearby home, damaging the house’s attic. It also spread to nearby brush, prompting the fire department to send a second crew to the scene.

The barn is at a total loss, said officials.  They said damage to the barn has caused the scene to be unsafe for fire investigators to get inside.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Thick black smoke could be seen from miles away. Below are some of the photos sent to us on social media.
