LAKE COUNTY – A 12-year-old boy died Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a semi truck in northwest Indiana.

Around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers from the Whiting Police Department were called to 119th Street and Indianapolis Boulevard on a report of a pedestrian struck.

Police arrived to find a semi truck had hit and killed 12-year-old Angel Villafuerte. A witness said the truck left the scene of the crash. Whiting police officers stopped the truck and driver a few miles from the scene. State police detained the driver for questioning but have not charged him. His truck has been impounded.

Family members said the boy had just been let out of school and was on his way home. His older brother watched it happened right in front of him.

Indiana State Police are investigating the crash at the request of Whiting police. Detectives are currently looking through surveillance footage of the crash obtained from local businesses in the area. State police crash investigators are also working to reconstruct the crash.
