CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 18, 2014) – A construction worker’s refill almost cost him more than $500 instead of 89 cents.
Christopher Lewis was working at the Ralph C. Johnson Center in Charleston Wednesday when he stopped to refill his soda in the cafeteria without paying for it. Police gave him a ticket, saying that failing to pay for refills is considered shoplifting at the VA facility.
Lewis said he didn’t realize he had to pay and didn’t see signs posted on drink machines indicating how much a refill cost. Lewis was given a $525 fine.
A VA spokeswoman said officials reviewed the case and decided to give Lewis a warning instead of making him pay the fine.
