SPEEDWAY, Ind. (April 28, 2014) – A man died Sunday night after apparently drowning in a Speedway apartment complex retention pond.

Officials were called to the 2100 block of Augusta Drive in the Eagle Creek Court Apartments around 11:25 p.m. after receiving reports indicating a person in the water. Police said multiple witnesses reported hearing cries for help coming from the area of the pond.

The victim is Dewey White, 29.

After officials searched the banks of the pond, two boats and one dive team were sent to the scene to assist.

“Using sonar from the shore, using sonar across the water and shore searches proved to not reveal anything and so we sent dive teams into the water,” said Speedway Fire Department Battalion Chief Everett Cheney.

Dive teams were sent in around 12:49 a.m. and located White about six minutes into the search.  Authorities said the fully-dressed white male, believed to be in his 30’s, was located approximately 10 feet away from shore in 10 feet of water.

Indianapolis Fire Department and Pike Township Fire helped in the search. Officials continue to investigate the incident.
