RIPLEY COUNTY (May 1, 2014) – Conservation officers are investigating the death of a teenager found in a pond Wednesday night.

Thomas Herring, 19, Sunman, disappeared around 2 p.m. His mother discovered he wasn’t inside their house and went looking for him in some nearby woods. His father found his son’s clothes beside a neighbor’s pond, where Herring apparently went for a swim.

Around 7 p.m., divers from the Department of Natural Resources found Herring’s body in 8 feet of water 10 yards from a small fishing pier.

According to conservation officers, Herring was not a strong swimmer. They’re not sure why he got into the water.
