INDIANAPOLIS – As more states move to ban and criminalize revenge porn, an Indiana lawmaker wants to start discussing the idea of outlawing it in the Hoosier state.

Revenge porn is the act of sharing a sexually explicit photo or video of someone with the online world without permission to get back at the victim. In an age when countless people are taking and sharing pictures on their cell phones, revenge porn cases are popping up all across the country and ruining lives.

FOX59 spoke to one central Indiana woman who said it turned her life upside down.

“I just started crying. All I could think about was, ‘Oh my, gosh my family, anybody seeing these, my kids. This is awful,'” said the victim who did not want to be identified.

She said an ex-boyfriend posted a naked picture of her online and before she knew it, almost everyone in her life had seen it, including her children.

“Somebody should do something about it,” she said.

Indiana Senator Jim Merritt may be that someone.

“It’s a mean world out there. This is a good example of something going on that is just not right,” he said.

He’s not alone in his thoughts. Last week, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed an anti-revenge porn bill into law. Merritt thinks it’s time Hoosier lawmakers considered the same action.

“We’ll take a look at it, because if it’s harming our society, if it’s harming people in our state or it has the potential to harm, I think we need a full discussion on it. No question about it,” said Merritt.

Until that happens, the woman who experienced revenge porn firsthand hopes other women will learn a lesson from her story and think twice before sending anyone an inappropriate picture.

“Anybody and everybody can see it. Just don’t do it,” she warned. “You think you can trust people and you can’t. You can’t trust anybody.”
