Man critically injured in shooting at Coke Lot near IMS

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 25, 2014) — A man was shot in a robbery near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the Coke Lot early Sunday morning.

Police said the victim and a friend were camping in the Coke Lot around 2:30 a.m., when a group of several men approached them and tried to rob them.  The suspects beat up his friend and as they ran off, the shooting victim chased after them, said police. One suspect turned around at the north end of the lot, pulling out a gun and shooting the man.

The suspects fled the scene, running across 30th Street and through an apartment complex.

The friend who was beaten is in fair condition. The victim who was shot is in critical condition at Eskenazi Hospital.

There is no word on the exact number of suspects or what, if anything, they got away with.
