Nice today but tracking rain on the way

Today will be another picture perfect day for most of the day today.  Clouds will begin to move in to our area after 5 pm and our window for rain in Indianapolis will be from about 9 pm through Sunday morning.  Rain could arrive as soon as 5 pm for places like Terre Haute and Lafayette could see rain as soon as 6 pm.  Rain will stick around through at least Noon here in Indianapolis with places like Muncie and Fort Wayne having a rain chance through 3pm on Sunday.  If you have outdoor plans for Sunday afternoon the day will not be a washout and there’s a good chance you may see some sun at your event.

There’s a 100 percent chance this afternoon that you’ll see some sunshine.  High pressure is still the dominant feature for us today and that will help keep the clouds away through the evening hours.  After 5 pm here in Indianapolis we will begin to see clouds sliding in from the west.  Rain could arrive here in the city before midnight tonight

Here comes the rain

and we will have a chance for rani through at least 6 am.

Model data is showing a rather robust .6 to .7 of an inch of rain for the overnight hours.  Generally this type of set-up,  a mid-level low sliding in ahead of a cold front with limited instability and moisture to work with, brings less than a quarter inch of rain.  The NAM is really the only model showing this type of outcome for the overnight hours.  Satellite data this morning supports the higher rain totals as the mid-level low is showcasing an impressive cloud structure.   We will call for a half inch of rain or less  with some localized higher rain totals through the overnight hours.

Yesterday we hit a high of 79 degrees.  The pleasant conditions will stick around this morning.  This afternoon we may see dew points ticking up and near 60°.  If we are going to get a half inch of rain than they better tick up to near 60°.  We will go 82° for today’s high temperature.  The thirty year average high for today is 80 degrees.  The record high for today is 98 degrees set back in 1933.  Sunrise is at 6:17 with the sun setting at 9:11

Looking at your extended forecast, Sunday highs will hit the upper 70s after expected rain.  Monday will be dry with a high near 80.  Tuesday and Wednesday are looking wet and soggy with highs in the mid-70s.  Thursday and Friday should be dry with highs going from near 80 on Thursday to the upper 80s on Friday!
