(CNN) — Former F1 driver Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has been released from the hospital to continue rehabilitation after a skiing accident last year, his management said in a statement Monday.

Schumacher, 45, suffered severe head trauma in a skiing accident at the French Alps resort of Meribel on December 29.

A seven-time world champion whose F1 career ended in 2012, Schumacher has been treated in Grenoble, France, since his accident.

CNN’s Stephanie Halaszm and Khushbu Shah contributed to this report.
