One dead after crash, woman was getting assistance for flat tire

CROWN POINT, Ind. (August 16, 2014) – A two vehicle crash in Crown Point yesterday claimed the life of a Chicago woman and sent three others to the hospital.

The crash happened at approximately 10:15 p.m. on I-65 NB at the 248.4 mile marker.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2005 Hyundai was stopped on the inside shoulder with the emergency flashers activated because of a flat tire.

The driver was attempting to call for assistance when a 1994 Volvo semi-tractor was unable to stop and ran over the top of the Hyundai.

The front seat passenger of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger sitting behind the driver was taken to Southlake Methodist Hospital Merrillville, IN with a possible broken femur and a concussion.

The driver was taken to St Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point with possible broken ribs.

The Hyundai was totaled.

The semi river was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital with complaint of pain and a toxicology test.

No citations were given at this time for the crash is still under investigation.

It is unsure at this time if alcohol and or drugs were involved at the time of the crash. Families have been notified.
