MELBOURNE, Australia (Sept. 16, 2014) – George the goldfish is swimming again.

A couple spent about $200 to save their beloved pet’s life after he developed a life-threatening tumor. George couldn’t swim, eat or sleep properly because of the growth, according to 9News.com.au.

His owners are pretty attached to him, so they opted to have George go under the knife. The procedure lasted about 45 minutes, and water from his pond was brought to the surgery in buckets so it could be fed into a tube to keep his gills wet.

The doctor who performed the operation described it as a delicate procedure and said he’d only performed surgery on a fish 10 times in his career.

With the tumor successfully removed, George—who’s already enjoyed 10 years of life—could live for another 20 years.
