One person dead after car crashes into bridge support, bursts into flames on the east side

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 23, 2014) – One person was killed after a car crashed Tuesday on the east side of Indianapolis.

It happened around 12:30 p.m. in the 900 block of South Emerson Avenue. The vehicle, a Ford Edge, was going south on Emerson when it crashed head-on into a bridge support and burst into flames.

The debris field from the crash extended about 200 feet, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. It took crews about 15 minutes to extinguish the flames.

North and south traffic was blocked from Gifford to Prospect, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan police.
