INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 30, 2014)—An Indianapolis mother was arrested after police said her 3-year-old son was shot in the hand.

Arnita Wilson, 31, was preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent.

Police responded to Wilson’s residence in the 9000 block of E. 39th Place around 3 p.m. Monday in reference to a person shot. When they arrived, they found a 3-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand.

Authorities said Wilson left a loaded handgun under the cushions of the couch within reach of the unattended 3-year-old boy. They said the boy removed the gun from the couch and shot himself in the hand.

He was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. The boy’s injuries were not life threatening.
