NEW YEAR'S EVE - COLDEST IN 16 YEARS
After an early morning low of 9° in the city (equaling the coldest of the season) the high Wednesday reached 23° -- the coldest for a December 31st since 1998. Wind chill temperatures struggled to reach the double digits.
COLD NIGHT FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS
A stiff wind of 10 to 15 miles per hour from the southwest will produce uncomfortable wind chill temperatures from 0° to -5° through midnight. The temperatures will dip into the middle teens tonight and hold steady as 2015 begins.
New Year's Eve revelers will brave cold conditions across much of the nation. Snow is possible in the southwest U.S. and arctic cold expands across much of the nation. Up to 1" of snow could fall in Las Vegas tonight. Freeze warnings are posted for Phoenix, Arizona and a freeze watch is in effect as far south as Tucson, Arizona.
3rd COLDEST EVER
Remember the snowstorm on January 5th (11.5" of snow) and then the -15° below temperature? How about the coldest July ever and no 90s until late August?
2014 in Indianapolis had an average temperature of 50.2° making this the 3rd coldest year on record and coldest since 1917.
NO DECEMBER SNOW
The .1" of snowfall for December 2014 tied 1941 and ranked among the top four least snowiest Decembers over the past 100 years! Only two other Decembers failed to produce no measurable snow over the past century: 1940 and 1941.
WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM
A storm in the southwest will swing northeast and race toward central Indiana this weekend. As the cold air retreats and moisture moves north, a brief period of icing is possible late Friday night into early Saturday morning. More information on timing will be available later tonight so check back. The warmer air will be out making this storm system all rain for much of the day on Saturday. Temperature should elevate into the lower to middle 40s by afternoon.
There will be snow with the storm starting early Sunday as the storm departs. Strong northwest winds in the wake of the storm will drive down colder air and snow showers through Sunday evening.
