INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time, the father of a 3-year-old who died from severe abuse last week is speaking out as he and his loved ones prepare to say their final goodbyes.
According to police, Amabel Calderon was beaten so badly she died from her injuries.
Her mother, Maria Calderon, is charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death and two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury. Her boyfriend, Freddie Bailey, is charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and three counts of battery.
Bailey confessed to FOX59 on Christmas Eve that he abused Amabel and described what happened to her inside the Motel 6 on Dec. 22.
“The first time I got up and I pushed her head back and then I sat there drinking and then she kept doing it and I kept pushing her head back into the corner…I didn’t think I was hurting her cause she wasn’t crying like that,” Bailey told FOX59.
In court records, Bailey admitted that on Saturday, Dec. 20, Amabel was forced to stand in the corner for six hours and the next day he hit her with a kid’s belt for being “disrespectful.”
Amabel’s father, Fredy Calderon, is now making arrangements to lay her to rest. He was understandably upset over the phone with FOX59 as he described the nightmare he was living.
“I wouldn’t wish this to anybody. To no parent, no mother, no father. Especially being in the holidays,” said Calderon over the phone.
A few hours later, he opened up even more via text message as he continues to grieve.
"I have no words to describe something beautiful about my baby girl," he wrote. "All gorgeous images are lost in the void where my heart used to be. It makes me sad because every holiday especially this one will be a reminder of the pain."
Calderon continued by writing, "Tears do escape my eyes when I see her laying down in this eternal slumber(.) I kiss her forehead to see if she wakes. I fool myself like she's a sleeping beauty but I'm back into reality and she's still asleep eternally. I can't bring her back I am only left to put her in a final resting place."
Calderon and his loved ones have created a gofundme page to help pay for her funeral expenses. The page describes his plight: “Dad had no plans on putting his 3 year old to rest so no planned funds are available. This beautiful girl is now out of harms way and in God's hands. Anything will help. Thank you in advance.”
Services for Amabel will be held at Old Bethel Methodist Church this Friday at 6 p.m.
