INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Sen. Joe Donnelly is urging Indiana residents to work together to reverse a new state law that critics say could allow discrimination against gay people.

The Indiana Democrat says in a 47-second statement posted on Facebook that he’s heard from a lot of people who say they are disappointed in the bill Gov. Mike Pence signed last week, saying he is disappointed too. He says he wants people outside Indiana to know that it is “the Hoosier hospitality state” where everyone is welcome. He didn’t say how he would try to reverse the law.

Pence defended the law while appearing Sunday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” saying it is not about discrimination, but about empowering people to confront “government overreach.”
