INDIANAPOLIS (April 6, 2015) – A man was shot and killed by police on the city’s southwest side early Monday morning.

Police identified the man Monday afternoon as Alexander Myers, 23, Indianapolis.

Police said officers responded to a call for help in the 5700 block of Ashby Drive just after midnight. They found Myers, who police described as suicidal, in possession of a rifle as he stood on the porch. He allowed his mother to leave and police asked him to drop his weapon. Police continued their verbal attempts to get Myers to give up the rifle, but he fired one shot. Police returned fire, hitting Myers multiple times.

Police provided emergency medical care while waiting for EMS personnel to arrive. EMS crews pronounced Myers dead at the scene. No one else was hurt as a result of the confrontation, police said. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, and a separate internal investigation will also be conducted. Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
