INDIANAPOLIS (May 13, 2015) – Helio Castroneves walked away after flipping his car during Indianapolis 500 practice Wednesday.

Castroneves’ car hit a wall and went airborne. IndyCar officials said the three-time Indy 500 winner was fine after being checked at the IMS hospital.

The crash capped off a tough day for the race car driver. IndyCar penalized him eight points in the Verizon IndyCar Series championship standings for causing a crash during the first lap of Saturday’s Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

IndyCar said in a statement:

“With the benefit of additional camera angles during our post-race review of Saturday’s race, the stewards determined actions of the No. 3 car (Castroneves) were the cause of the first-lap incident. This obviously changed our view of the entire incident. At the conclusion of every post-race review, all penalty options are available to the stewards and they determined an avoidable contact penalty was warranted.”

Pippa Mann lost control of her car coming out of turn four around 5 p.m. She was able to exit the car and was taken to the infield care center.
